Why pay , , or more to get a manicure with cosmetic glitter at a salon, when you can do it yourself at home for a fraction of the price? With a little practice, the proper techniques, and some glitter, you can create professional-looking manicures on yourself and your friends for a fraction of what you would spend at a salon. Read on to learn how.

How to do a Glitter Manicure

Before You Paint:

Remove any old polish with nail polish remover. Push back the cuticles. Apply cuticle cream to the nails and let the cream sit for a few minutes. Then, using an orange stick, gently push back your cuticles. Shape the tips. Using a nail file or emery board, shape the nails into a shape you like. A couple of popular shapes include rounded or square tips. Hand washing time. For polish to adhere properly, nails must be free of oils. Remove any lingering cuticle cream. Soak a cotton ball with a bit of nail polish remover and swipe it over the nails. Apply a base coat of nail polish. The base coat will help the main nail polish color last longer once applied. Additionally, the base coat will prevent the glitter from scratching up the nails. Allow the base coat to dry completely.

When You Want to Cover the Whole Nail with Glitter:

Apply a base coat over the nails. Allow it to completely dry. Paint the nails with a coat of polish that matches the cosmetic glitter. For example, if you want to use red glitter, consider using red nail polish. Sprinkle cosmetic glitter over the whole nail using a dry cosmetic brush. Allow the polish to completely dry. Add a top coat of polish over the glitter. Allow it to completely dry before adding another layer of top coat over the glittery nails.

When You Want to Make Glittery French Tips:

Apply the main coat of nail polish all over the nails; this is the color that others see will below the nail tips. To apply then nail polish evenly, start at the top middle section of the nail and paint a line of polish down the length of the nail. Then, paint a line of polish on the sides of the nail. Allow the polish to completely dry. Apply a second coat of the same color if the first coat is too translucent for your taste. Allow this coat to completely dry. Paint a coat of polish over the tips of the nails in any color you like. If you have trouble painting a straight line over the tips of the nails, use a sticky note or masking tape as an inexpensive guide. Do not use invisible tape as a guide because the adhesive on it will lift the nail polish off the nails. Apply cosmetic glitter to the tips of the nails while the polish is still wet. Use a dry, medium-sized cosmetic brush to scoop some glitter out of the small canister it comes in, and shake the glitter over your nail. Make sure the nails are over a piece of paper so you can dump the unused glitter back into the canister. Allow the nail polish to completely dry. Although there are several types of glitters on the market, the best kind to use on your nails is a cosmetic glitter or glitter specifically made for fingernails, as craft glitter can scratch and damage nails. Additionally, some craft glitter is made from glass, which may accidentally scratch the lens of your eye if you rub it with your hand. Apply a top coat of polish to the nails. Apply the top coat to the part of the nails that do not have glitter first. Then paint the top coat of polish over the tips of the nails. Doing this will prevent you from smudging the glitter onto the upper part of the nail. Allow the first top coat of polish to completely dry before adding an additional layer of top coat.

Once you get the hang of painting your own nails with your dominant and non-dominant hands, try painting different designs to which you can apply glitter. Then, try out your new techniques on your friend's nails.
